Ski Surfin' $7.98 "Question: What do surfers do when it snows? Answer: they go ski surfin'!" That bit of copy offers nearly all the explanation necessary for this one-shot instrumental rock album, which attempts to create a cold-weather counterpart to the surf sounds that were all the rage when this was recorded in 1963. Judging from these dozen tunes, Ski Surfin' wasn't all that different from the seaside variety, with the favored music dominated by a wall of sharp, twangy guitars and a tight, percolating rhythm section, though the presence of pedal steel guitar and electric piano on some cuts does set this apart from standard-issue surf fare. Beyond the curious concept, what makes Ski Surfin' most memorable is the presence of a handful of top players on the Los Angeles studio circuit -- drummer to the stars Hal Blaine is behind the traps, legendary session guitarists Billy Strange and Tommy Tedesco handle the six-string chores, and David Gates, who wrote a handful of girl group hits before hitting pay dirt as the leader of Bread in the '70s, plays bass. Outside of a few recognizable melodies such as "Baby, It's Cold Outside," "Midnight Sun," and "Winter Wonderland," most of Ski Surfin' consists of "original" songs that could well have been written an hour before recording began, but the musicians on board deliver their typical fiery licks throughout, and while this is no lost classic of instrumental rock, it's a pleasing oddity for fans of '60s surf stuff who enjoy hearing some top-shelf players on a lark. ~ Mark Deming, All Music GuidePerformers: David Gates - Bass (Electric), Guitar (Bass); Al Delroy - Piano; Hal Blaine - Drums; Al DeLory - Piano; Billy Strange - Guitar; Tommy Tedesco - Guitar; Wayne Burdick - Guitar |

Ski Songs $12.98 By the late 1950s and early '60s, Bob Gibson (banjo/acoustic 12-string guitar/vocals) had become a mainstay and favorite on the emerging folkie singer/songwriter scene. After a few generally well-received platters for Riverside, his debut release on Elektra was somewhat of a departure -- especially regarding the subject matter. While his new label had already issued a number of "theme" or concept albums, Gibson undoubtedly presented them with a first. His appropriately titled Ski Songs (1959) was an entire project of originals dedicated to the sport of snow skiing. Supported by notable session musicians Joe Puma (electric guitar), Russell Savkas (bass), and the multi-talented Eric Weissberg (banjo/bass/guitar), Gibson demonstrates his uncanny ability to weave clever narratives. His trademark smart and upon occasion silly verses surface immediately in the long-player's opening tale of barroom-influenced braggadocio titled "Celebrated Skier." A considerably more introspective side of the artist can be heard within the simple and lovely images that adorn the ballad "In This White World." Melodically, the upbeat musical saga of "Super Skier" recalls the Kingston Trio's classic protest "M.T.A." Lyrically, the verses spin a yarn of a crazed slope enthusiast whose ego gets the better of him before his fatal spill in which "...they had to use three toboggans to carry all the pieces down the hill." Remaining true to the folk tradition, there is a distinct taste of the high and lonesome Appalachian folk in the endearing, although never maudlin, love song "Highlands Lassie." The catchy "Bend in His Knees" joins "What'll We Do" in capturing the youthful exuberance and perspective of not only the ups and downs of the sport itself, but in the case of the latter, the practically child-like anticipation of the ski season and the attempts to make it last year-round. Other nods to the genre are "Talking Skier" -- which is Gibson's take-off/put-on of the so-called talkin' blues style that had the performer unraveling his message in a spoken, rambling delivery -- and the concluding "Skol to the Skier," which wraps up the effort on a positive note as Gibson sends a final salute to those brave and truly fearless souls who are active participants in the sport. Ski Songs would garner a special place in the hearts, minds, and ears of the artist's fan base, it remained out of print for several decades until the 2008 CD reissue by Collectors' Choice Music. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music GuidePerformers: Bob Gibson - Banjo, Guitar, Guitar (12 String Acoustic), Vocals; Joe Puma - Guitar (Electric); Russell Savkas - Bass |

Road Runner $15.99 If Albert Lee fans have grown used to his commitment to a handful of good songs and extraordinary guitar work, then Road Runner will not disappoint. Lee and his band kick off with the title track, an easy-rolling rocker with a little vocal help from Buddy Miller. Lee follows with a solid set list that includes selections from John Hiatt, Leo Kottke, and Richard Thompson. These songs all receive tasteful renditions, but the real fun comes with uptempo fare like Billy Burnette and Tony Colton's "Didn't Start Livin'," and Delbert McClinton/Benmont Tench/Gary Nicholson's "Livin' It Down." It doesn't hurt that Lee has enlisted the talents of drummer Don Heffington, bassist Bob Glaub, and steel guitarist Buddy Emmons on Road Runner. Guest appearances by co-producer Steve Fishell on "Didn't Start Livin' and "Rock of Your Love," along with guitarist Mark S. Cohen on the latter, also add something extra to these arrangements. One of the coolest exchanges on the album is between Lee and Emmons' guitar and steel for the last minute and a half on "Working on Love." Guitar freaks, of course, will enjoy the album, but so will country music fans looking for tuneful songs that fall somewhere between the rough edges of alternative country and the glitter of Nashville. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., RoviPerformers: Bekka Bramlett - Vocals (Background); Buddy Miller - Vocals (Background); Jon Randall - Vocals (Background); Mark S. Cohen - Guitar (Acoustic); Buddy Emmons - Guitar (Steel), Pedal Steel, Vocals (Background); Steve Fishell - Guitar (Acoustic), Lap Steel Guitar; Bob Glaub - Bass; Don Heffington - Drums, Percussion; Albert Lee - Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Keyboards, Mandolin, Vocals (Background); Alexandra Lee - Vocals, Vocals (Background) |
